Canadian Textile Reference Re Certain Trousers Lining

On June 4, 2008, the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) announced that it was conducting an investigation into the appropriateness of reducing or removing the customs duty on importations from all countries of a woven fabric, plain weave, dyed, of untwisted textured polyester filament yarns in the weft and untwisted non-textured polyester filament yarns in the warp, of a weight not exceeding 55 g/m2, of tariff item No. 5407.69.90, for use as knee lining in the manufacture of trousers.

This type of proceeding is called a "textile reference".  It is usually conducted by way of written submissions and does not involve a hearing unless complex matters arise.  The CITT will make recommendations to the Minister of Finance at the conclusion of the investigation.

Interested parties (persons that will be affected by the recommendations of the CITT - e.g., domestic manufacturers, users, importers, etc.) may file notices or participation.  The deadline for filing notices of participation and questionnaire responses is June 23,  2008.  Submissions in opposition or support of the requester must be filed by August 1, 2008.  The CITT will issue its recommendations on September 10, 2008.
