Canada - EU Free Trade Agreement Talks to Move Forward

Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper is reporting that on April 27, 2009, the European Union endorsed plans today to open negotiations with Canada on a new free-trade pact.  The free trade talks will formally launch at an EU-Canada leaders summit in Prague on May 6th.

The comprehensive FTA talks will include discussions of market access for goods, agricultural goosa, investment services, services, government procurement and labour mobility.  The announements provide an indication that the negotiations might involve harmonization of food and animal safety standards.  All signals point to the Canada-EU FTA being an evolutionary document - meaning that Canada will be negotiating the next model of FTA.
