Canada To Soon Pass Legislation to Implement the Canada - EFTA FTA

On January 28, 2009, Canada tabled (meaning = introduced in the House of Commons for first reading) the Canada - European Free Trade Association Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act.  The previous version of the legislation ended when the House of Commons perogued to stop the threat of a Coalition Government. The Canada - EFTA FTA was signed on January 26, 2008 and is expected to come into force by July 1, 2009.  Barring any unforeseen delays, this implementation date is reasonable.

I testified before the House of Commons Standing Committee on trade Concerning the Canada-EFTA FTA and I think it is a positive development.  However, the Canada - EFTA FTA is primarily a trade in goods agreement and is the least comprehensive of Canada's trade agreements.

For more information about the Canada - EFTA FTA, please contact Cyndee Todgham Cherniak at 416-307-4168.  In the current economic climate, there may be trading opportunities for Canadian companies.
