Members of the public are invited to attend the hearing in a softwood lumber arbitration, London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) case 91312 (whether Canada has cured the breach identified in LCIA 7941) that will occur on Thursday, June 11 and Friday June 12, 2009 in Washington, DC. The hearing will be held at the Offices of the World Bank, Main Building, 1818 H Street, NW, Washington, DC, in room MC 13-121. The hearing is scheduled to take place from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm EST each day, although if the Panel requires, the hearing could go later than 6:00 pm.
While these arbitral hearings are open to the public, the tribunal may order members of the public to exit the hearing chamber if confidential information is to be presented. Please note that public seating in the hearing room and in the overflow room is limited and consequently will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Due to the security requirements of the World Bank, any person who wishes to attend the hearing, either in the hearing room or the overflow room, must register beforehand. Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Softwood Lumber Division is asking for interested parsons to contact them before June 3, 3009 to be added on the list.
This is important because most arbitrations unvolving governments are behind closed dorrs. Both the Governments of Canada and the United States are making great strides in improving transparency by opening the proceedings to the public.
