Mexico Retaliates as U.S. Renegs re NAFTA Trucking Plan
The budget bill that President Obama recently signed included the elimination of funding for the program that allowed Mexican trucks into the U.S. beyond the 25 mile border zone. As soon as the U.S. took that action, Mexico imposed retaliatory tariffs on a wide variety of products. The list of products is attached. It involves $2.4 billion worth of U.S. exports ranging from fruit, beer and wine, to sunglasses and washing machines. Legislative action has been initiated to fix the problem. However, Pres. Obama will be visiting Mexico in April, so it is likely the matter will be resolved before then.
Just how likely are the Mexicans to continue to cooperate with the U.S. on security issues, if the U.S. reneges on its trade agreements?
