Canada Releases 2007 Export Controls Report

Canada just released a Report of the Minister of Foreign Affairs respecting operations Under the Export and Import Permits Act for the Year 2007, which can be found at

In 2007, Canada took enforcement actions. The Report for 2007 indicates that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) referred to the Export and Import Controls Bureau (EICB) of the Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) (1) 236 detentions of export shipments and (2) a further 49 post-export queries, to determine the applicability of export controls. CBSA also undertook, in cooperation with DFAIT, 4 investigations into suspected violations of the EIPA.

Voluntary compliance is a key element in Canada's export control system in 2007. Compliance with export controls laws was important in 2007, and it is now. Canadian companies exporting goods and buyers of Canadian goods need to be aware of Canada's export controls laws.
